Small Stellated Dodecahedron

small stellated dodecahedron

The small stellated dodecahedron is made of 20 pyramids with pentagonal bases. You will need to cut 60 Golden triangle faces in 6 different colors.

Since the base of the pyramids that make up this model are pentagons, each pyramid is flexible. When finished, this model is more flexible than most of the other polyhedron. A smaller version of this model is less flexible than a larger model.

In his book, Polyhedron Models, Father Wenninger gives this description of the pyramids that you must make;

(1) Y B O R G          (4) W B G Y R

(2) W G O R B         (5) W O Y B G

(3) W Y R G O         (8) W R B O Y

Create a small pyramid with the colors of pyramid (1) ... Y B O R G.

You must be consistent in how you order the colors in your pyramid!

All of your pyramids in this first half of the polyhedron must be ordered in the same direction.

Make sure that you have severely trimmed the tabs near the top of this pyramid in order to not have paper bunching up inside of the point.

On the tab of the first face (in this case the yellow face) mark the number of this pyramid ... in this case # 1.

Create the next 5 points in this manner. Glue the faces together in a clockwise placement and number the pyramids on the tab of the first color in the list.

Now arrange points 2,3,4,5, and 6 around the base of point 1 in a clockwise manner according to their number. Connect the first face of each pyramid (where the pyramid is numbered) to the #1 pyramid. The numbered face of #2 should attach to the numbered face of #1 and then continue gluing in a clockwise direction around your initial point.

You will now have a set of 5 pentagonal pyramids arranged in a circle around a center pentagonal pyramid.

You now have created one-half of the polyhedron. For the second half, make those first 6 pentagonal pyramids again (using the list above) but arrange the faces of each point in a counter clockwise order. Label the tab of the first face of each point in some slightly new way ... maybe 1R, to mean 1 reverse.

You wil now be able to visualize where the next pyramid should be placed because you will be able to see the same colored facial pentagrams (5 pointed stars) that are emerging. You will be placing pyramid #6R next. Then place 5R, 4R, 3R, etcetera.
